Feeding Behavior of American Shad during Spawning Migration in the York River, Virginia

چکیده
—Throughout its native range, American shad Alosa sapidissima is thought to cease feeding during anadromous migration. We examined the feeding habits of American shad during spawning migration by documenting changes in diet composition and feeding that occur in mature fish in the York River, Virginia. American shad were collected prior to and after spawning at various locations on a gradient from open ocean waters to the freshwater spawning grounds. During the estuarine phase of migration, American shad fed predominantly upon mysid shrimp Neomysis americana and calanoid copepods. Feeding occurred during prespawning migration but decreased on the spawning grounds where plant matter comprised the majority of the stomach contents. After spawning, feeding intensity increased significantly as American shad resumed feeding on mysid shrimp and copepods during downstream migration through estuarine waters. Comparisons of diet composition and feeding intensity between the oceanic environment and the estuary indicate that calanoid copepods and planktonic shrimp dominated the diet in both environments, although feeding intensity was reduced within the estuary during the spawning migration. These results indicate that American shad in the York River feed during anadromous migration, most heavily in the middle estuary where there is an abundance of mysid shrimp. While shad lose somatic weight during migration, indicating insufficient consumption to maintain body condition, the ability to feed during some portion of migration and then soon after spawning may be important in decreasing postspawning mortality.

Variation in American Shad Batch Fecundity
—American shad Alosa sapidissima in semelparous and iteroparous populations along its native range are thought to have nearly equivalent lifetime reproductive output due to reciprocal latitudinal trends in fecundity and degree of repeat spawning. Geographic differences in reproductive patterns are believed to be linked to varying environmental conditions, and this fine tuning is considered stro...
متن کاملThe innate immunity changes of the female anadromous hilsa shad, Tenualosa ilisha , during spawning and post spawning season
Tenualosa ilisha (Hamilton) is a valuable migratory fish belonging to the family Clupeidae and it is distributed in a wide area from the Persian Gulf to coasts of Pakistan and China’s southern sea. The aim of the present study was to investigate the changes occurring in innate immunity parameters during upstream migration and comparing them to those during post spawning. Sixty mature female hil...

متن کاملEstimating Stock Composition of Anadromous Fishes from Mark–Recovery Data: Possible Application to American Shad
—Information on the stock composition of mixed-stock fisheries is often needed to develop management regulations for anadromous fishes. Although several methods can be used to infer stock composition, marking studies have long been identified as a promising approach. Hatchery-reared larval American shad Alosa sapidissima are marked with a river-specific mark and released in stock enhancement pr...
متن کاملContribution of Allochthonous Carbon to American Shad Production in the Mattaponi River, Virginia, Using Stable Isotopes
Our objective was to quantify the contribution of autochthonous, locally-produced phytoplankton, and allochthonous, terrestrial-derived organic matter (OM) to the production of young-of-year (YOY) American shad (Alosa sapidissima) using stable isotopes. We measured the carbon and nitrogen stable isotope composition of YOY American shad in the tidal fresh water of the Mattaponi River, a tributar...
